GRANDMOTHER

(for Bessie)

(Written shortly after her passing in August, 1993)

She cannot have come

From there to here

But by rutted gravel path.

A winding road of four score years,

She's found her way at last.

She cannot now go

From here to there

But by a short, smooth road.

More she's borne than yet to bear,

Now her steps are slowed.

And now she goes

From here to where

We all must sometime go.

An unobstructed, open door,

Lit by heaven's glow.
